Each year more than 10 million pets are lost. 50% of dogs and 75% of cats are without collars by the time they arrive at shelters. Microchips are now available to permanently identify your pet. The size of a grain of rice, the chip is placed just under the skin between the shoulder blades of your dog or cat in much the same way a vaccine is administered. When a lost pet arrives at the shelter, a special hand-held scanner (similar to those used in supermarkets) is passed over the animal’s shoulder blades. Each chip is coded with a unique, unalterable 10-digit code and is registered nationwide with the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) Animal Recovery Program. They can then match your pet’s ID and owner information through a central database maintained 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by the AKC.
